Embracing the Brave Girl Within: 3 Practices to Answer Your Calling

Taking a bold step toward a new path often feels like standing at the edge of a cliff. The view behind is familiar and comforting, but the horizon ahead holds unknown possibilities. Recently, I faced this exact moment when I accepted a new role as Executive Vice President for a large nonprofit organization. The opportunity promised growth and a chance to serve in deeper ways. Yet, the real courage came from leaving behind something I loved—something already good—to follow a calling that felt aligned with my purpose.

This kind of bravery is quiet and personal. It requires more than just ambition; it demands clarity, honesty, and a willingness to trust the journey before seeing the full picture. If you find yourself at a similar crossroads, unsure whether to stay in your comfort zone or step into something new, this post is for you. Here are three practical practices to help you activate your own Brave Girl and answer your calling.

Get Still to Hear Your Inner Voice

In today’s busy world, noise surrounds us constantly. It’s easy to get caught up in daily tasks, deadlines, and distractions. But when you want to connect with your true calling, you need to create intentional space for stillness.

Why stillness matters

  • It allows you to listen to the subtle whispers of your heart and spirit.

  • It helps you separate external expectations from your authentic desires.

  • It creates room for prayer, meditation, or deep reflection.

How to practice stillness

  • Set aside 10 to 20 minutes daily in a quiet place.

  • Turn off your phone and avoid interruptions.

  • Use breathing exercises or guided meditation apps to calm your mind.

  • Ask yourself questions like: “What do I truly want?” and “What is calling me forward?”

For example, when I faced my decision, I spent early mornings sitting quietly with a journal and prayer. Those moments gave me clarity and peace, even when the choice felt daunting.

Write Down Your Thoughts to Find Clarity

Our minds can become cluttered with fears, doubts, and what-ifs. Writing down your thoughts helps unload this mental weight and brings clarity.

Benefits of writing

  • Organizes your feelings and ideas.

  • Reveals patterns and priorities.

  • Helps you weigh pros and cons objectively.

What to write

  • List the benefits and challenges of your current situation.

  • Explore the fears and hopes tied to the new opportunity.

  • Imagine possible outcomes and how each aligns with your values.

Try creating a simple chart or journal entry. For instance, I wrote down everything I loved about my previous role alongside what I hoped to achieve in the new position. Seeing it on paper made the decision less overwhelming and more grounded in reality.

Take a Wide-Angle View of Your Life

Sometimes, we focus too narrowly on one aspect of our lives—career, family, or finances—when making big decisions. Taking a broad perspective helps you see how different parts connect and influence each other.

What this means

  • Consider your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

  • Reflect on relationships and community support.

  • Think about long-term goals beyond immediate gains.

How to do it

  • Create a life map or vision board that includes all areas important to you.

  • Talk with trusted friends, mentors, or spiritual advisors for outside perspectives.

  • Reflect on how your next step fits into your overall life story.

When I looked at my life from this wide angle, I realized the new role wasn’t just a job change; it was a chance to grow in ways that aligned with my deeper purpose and values.

Embracing Your Brave Girl

Stepping into your calling requires more than courage; it calls for intentional practices that nurture clarity and confidence. Getting still, writing down your thoughts, and taking a wide-angle view are simple yet powerful ways to activate your Brave Girl.

If you are standing at a crossroads, remember that growth often means leaving something good behind to embrace what feels right for your soul. Trust the process, listen deeply, and take the next step with faith.

Your Brave Girl is ready. Are you?
